With warmer weather right around the corner, professional baseball teams - including our own Colorado Rockies - are now taking to diamonds across the southern half of the U.S. for spring training. While most of the media coverage is understandably devoted to covering teams getting ready for the upcoming season, there have actually been two rather interesting baseball-related divorce stories to develop this past week.
Pete Rose filing for divorce
Last week, baseball great Pete Rose officially filed for divorce from his wife Carol in a California court, citing irreconcilable differences.
The divorce petition - which offers neither details for the split nor a date for the couple's separation - asked the family court judge to award him all of the property that he acquired prior to the marriage, including memorabilia and jewelry.
It also indicates that while Rose, 69, is willing to pay spousal support, he is unwilling to pay his wife's legal fees.
The couple wed in 1984 and have two grown children.
Rose, baseball's all-time hits leader with 4,256, remains the subject of a lifetime ban from professional baseball after an investigation revealed that he had gambled during his playing and managing days with the Cincinnati Reds. As a result of the ban, he remains ineligible to appear on the Hall of Fame ballot.
Milton Bradley accused of domestic abuse in divorce petition
Monique Bradley, wife of Seattle Mariners outfielder Milton Bradley, recently filed for divorce, making serious accusations of spousal abuse in her divorce petition.
According to the petition, Milton Bradley allegedly threw a glass at Monique Bradley in a New York City hotel room on New Year's Eve, leaving a cut on her head.
The petition - which cited irreconcilable differences - reads in part, "As soon as Milton saw me bleeding, he started crying and begging me to forgive him. He stated that he lost it and that he would kill himself if I left him. I did not know what to do."
Milton Bradley is currently in the final year of his contract and battling for a DH and/or outfield spot with the Mariners. His on- and off-the-field exploits over the years have been the subject of great media attention.
Most recently, he was arrested in January after police responded to a call from Monique Bradley, claiming that she was being threatened. His hearing on the matter is scheduled for sometime this week.
