Lauren Bush, the Ralph Lauren model and niece of former President George W. Bush, married Ralph Lauren's son David Lauren in Telluride, Colorado, on Sunday. There is no word on whether the couple had a prenuptial agreement (nor on whether the bride will become Lauren Lauren) but in circumstances like this, where both partners come into the marriage with significant financial assets, many couples opt for prenuptial agreements as a form of in-advance asset protection.
Essentially, prenuptial agreements are contracts parties sign before they marry that stipulate some of what will happen if they are to divorce. Many people use them because they do not want a separation to leave their carefully arranged finances in complete disarray. They also have the advantage of making divorces a little more civil because there is less to argue about, since some things have already been agreed to in writing.
A prenuptial agreement might have been a good idea for the new couple. Lauren Bush has made a very nice living as a fashion model and probably stands to inherit some money from her wealthy family. Lauren also has family money and is the vice president of advertising, marketing and corporate communications at Polo Ralph Lauren. Their wedding occurred at his 17,000-acre Double RL ranch in Telluride. A prenuptial agreement, then, could allow the two of them some peace of mind by assuring each that his and her assets would both be protected.
Of course, Colorado residents do not need to be wealthy heirs or jet-setting models to need some advice when it comes to family law. If you are considering divorce and are concerned about what it may mean for your personal finances, it might be helpful to have a consultation with a family law attorney. This attorney will be able to leave you better informed about the process.
