A new study may add a whole new meaning to the phrase of wanting to pull one's hair out in frustration. Previously, our Colorado divorce and family law blog discussed a study suggesting that men are more likely to gain weight after a divorce. Well, another study is suggesting that women are more likely to experience hair loss after divorce.
The divorce process can be a very stressful time for many Denver couples and other couples throughout the United States. As a result, more doctors and researchers are suggesting that high levels of stress caused by child custody battles or arguments over splitting assets can have a serious impact on one's health and may lead to weight gain or hair loss.
Although both men and women may become stressed out during the divorce process, one doctor suggested that men and women are affected by stress differently. Women may feel overwhelmed by all of the issues that need to be addressed before obtaining a divorce while men may not be as troubled by the issues that will need to be hashed out.
The study linking hair loss in women to divorce was presented a couple of weeks ago at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' annual conference in Denver. The study examined how 84 female identical twins and 66 male identical twins were affected by different factors that may have caused one twin to experience more hair loss than the other. Researchers concluded that women who were not happy in their marriages or who were divorced or widowed experienced the most hair loss.
The biggest contributing factor to hair loss in men was genetics.
Going through a divorce may make an individual feel like pulling his or her hair out in frustration, but those who work with an attorney often discover that they are able to better manage their stress caused by divorce.
