Many Denver residents know J. Crew and are familiar with the face of the clothing company, Jenna Lyons. J. Crew has made Lyons, its president and creative director, a prominent fixture of its ad campaigns. She usually appears in advertisements with her son to provide the message that it is possible to be a modern career woman and mother -- and to look great while doing it.
The tone of those ad campaigns might need to change, though. Lyons recently filed for divorce from Vincent Mazeau, her husband since 2002, and is reportedly leaving him for a relationship with a woman.
It seems Lyons' marriage to Mazeau fell apart this summer. The two are said to now be trying to work out a custody agreement for their son, Beckett.
Also up in the air is whether Lyons will have to may Mazeau spousal support. Last year, she earned over $4 million while he was primarily a stay-at-home dad. Mazeau has made the argument that he gave up on his career as an artist so that Lyons could pursue her career at J.Crew; Lyons has pointed out that she has paid almost all the household expenses since their relationship began.
In child custody cases like this, judges generally consider the best interests of the child. In terms of spousal support, they look to each spouse's need and to the other spouse's ability to pay. Of course, that is an immense over-generalization; each relationship is different and there are a host of other nuances and smaller factors that play into the decision. A Denver attorney who handles divorce cases would be able to elaborate more on all the details of what goes into child custody and spousal support determinations.
